The following article confirmed that "As of version 0.9.0 Pocket Edition uses a modified version Google's LevelDB" (Mojang)

Here are some good articles explaining the basic concept about LevelDB.

In my opinion, it is good for PocketMine, in the long run, to use one of the google's popular open-source database engine for storing map data that is compatible to Minecraft PE, so that people can directly be played on PocketMine without the need of any conversion for their MCPE maps. I know this is not going to be easy...

Right now, PocketMine only supports Anvil and MCRegion because, when Mojang announced infinite worlds for MCPE, @shoghicp added the formats that PC version use. It wasn't until it was almost fully developed that he learned that it used LevelDB rather than Anvil or MCRegion. So, currently, PocketMine supports PC worlds only. He will be working to add LevelDB very soon (wants to work on server stability first) and then after that, he will work on support of pre-0.9 MCPE worlds and .pmf worlds (from PocketMine 1.3 and below), where they will automatically convert to the world format you choose to use.

Just give it time :p The team is very busy working on 1.4, but it is getting very far and development is speeding up quicker than ever!*

*May not actually be quicker than ever, but it is very quick development
