Websites, game servers, etc are all run my a machine somewhere in the world, and other people connect to them through the internet. Game server hosts run servers from a VPS (Virtual Private Server), which is pretty much a simplified version of a PC you would run, and then the website you use connects to the VPS and shows you any files it contains, the console log if that host allows that to happen, and other information, as well as some features to be able to interact with the VPS without having direct access to it. It's a really neat system, and definitely something I would never have thought possible when I was younger. I hope this helps you understand a bit more about how this all works. If not, I or someone else can go into a bit more detail, or you can Google it :p
