    hello guys this swagboy47
this is a serious problem which is copying other peoples plugins and ideas by accident , like what happened to @Topic and his plugin healthbar , so in this discussion we are discussing a way that we could prevent that from happening , post your opinion below

I don't think it matters and you're making it into a bigger deal than it really is. Bukkit has like 100s of copies of the same plugin. It really doesn't matter.

You can get in trouble for posting a plugin with similar functionality to an existing plugin?

No you cannot, read the rules. Making derivative works (unless expressly prohibited by the respective license) is never discouraged. We have become very polite with plugin ideas and that somewhat inhibits innovation.

Simply said, trust the forum. No one will ban you if you didn't copy. (Telling innocent lies to a baby?)

I think to be perfectly honest is that there should be more plugins of same nature, simply put devs can go inactive some are more active then others or offer things and do it the way you prefer, I could have one plugin dose same as another but yet do it in a different way and people could like that better. plus competition and variety are good things for development.

I think the plugin rules somewhat need changing but hey don't like can always make a site where your plugin gets added regardless and well what is copying is it complete plugin or is taking multiple plugins and mixing together really its a fine line, also open source closed source issue.
    many things.
Just let people add the plugins have people rate them if they are good people will rate high and use them more if not they wont its really that simple
I know I dont care if people copy my plugins cause there open source deal with it it happens other wise close source and encode them ;)

The point isn't people copy your idea; you can at most say they don't respect their innovation, but it is nothing bad unless they copied your code.

BTW, Creative Commons can be applied for non-code things like ideas (according to my understanding).

That's what I thought.. There is no reason to restrict them.

here is one of my favorite licenses / agreements

"Reading this statement and the first word "Reading" in affect is accepting this agreement,
All your future and past ideas and works are now owned by me (the owner of this post as in the one who typed it)
to opt out of this agreement you must like this post"

    now that's a great agreement.

All in all if you open to sharing and allow people to use and or modify freely your code release under MIT
if you release open source but not commercial use use GPL v3

I think offering a page with customized versions for each plugin, would be good for creativity and increased options. To keep it fair, all customized versions of plugin would have to be approved by the original creator and he/she is still considered the sole author/creator. An easy example, would be Falk's DisguiseMe plugin. The actual number values of each disguise can be tough for many younger players on a public server to figure out. So someone could add in alias commands like /d zombie to render the disguise. Then as long as Falk approved it, it could be listed as an available customized version under his name, without replacing the original version.

I might be missing some challenges with implementing this, but I am just tossing it out there for feedback.

Or you could make a pull request on his github repo.

I like your point that developers can become inactive. Other developers should be able to pick up the plugin if people think it is necessary, no reason to stop them from doing so. I also agree that competition is a good thing.

And yea, SimpleAuth monopolized the authentication-type plugin competition.

@shoghicp said that we could make pull requests to SimpleAuth, but what I have in mind is just too... well, deviated.
