I wouldn't want them to have to go editing the php.ini file. I'm trying to think of a way to automate this process or streamline it instead of telling the user to go find the file and add the necessary components. I knew there was something I would have to do!

Wow thanks. I could configure it to use a local mail server. And tell the user to install it in a certain directory so the ini file can find it. Hmmmm. Or would a remote server be better?

I think I need to do more research on how mail servers work before I do this so I don't end up screwing people's computers up by messing with their email.

You would have to use some service to text for you because your PHP can't magically turn into a cell phone.

Even if you did link that to a SMS service, you would still have to pay for each time someone said something going in/outbound as you need a SMS middleman service. Which would also be very exploitable. I doubt you could make it secure with immature players texting into your server charging themselves and you for replying and sending.

Yeah, a PocketMine server should never use a texting service.. way too expensive and pointless.

Awesome! I had no idea what an SMTP server was until you mentioned it. I was like: crap I have no idea what he is talking about. I better google it!

I really want to make something like this because I feel it would be a useful resource. But my knowledge of email servers and whatnot is horrible.

Okay, did a little research. There is a Gmail smtp server that requires you to have a Gmail account, which is easy to get. A php thingy called PEAR mail can easily connect to smtp servers and send an email. So I would require the user to have a Gmail account, which is not asking much. And they would have to enter their email and password.

Nope :), knew about the gmail thing before, every email provider has an SMTP server cause that's how they send mail. The only thing would be the PEAR extention, pear is not included with the php bianary that pocketmine provides. However, we could write an install script in Python for example to handle this issue.
