I personally have no need of this, all my gear has static ips That said, what a fabulous idea! SO many people will find this a boon. Well done indeed. Regards Decado
Hi If you want to use a URL identifier like www.myserverishere.com instead of an ip address for your server (or web page) then you have to register that identifier with a "Domain name server" (DNS) think of it like a online phonebook. Everytime you type in ANY web address your enquiry is directed to a DNS which looks up that URL and then says "Oh yes that's IP address 123.456.789.000 and forwards you there. To do this you generally need a static ip address (one that never changes) after all what good would a phone book be if your phone number changed 3 times a week? To make life difficult many Internet Service Providers do not have enough ip addresses to have one for every customer (IPv4 has already run out world wide and we are moving to the newer IPv6) so they set up a pool of ip addresses and as each cutomer connects he is allocated an address on a " lease " typically 8 hours. If you are still connected after 8 hours the ip lease is renewed. This is called a "dynamic ip address". If you disconnect for any length of time odds are you will re connect with a different ip address. Then your url address will be broken. There are services available where people with a dynamic address can have their url hosted with a DNS which can be updated as your ip address changes sort of like updating your phonebook on the fly. That's where this pluging comes in This plugin can be used to automatically keep your Dynamic DNS service updated as you ip address changes so your URL is always current. I hope that helps I've tried to give you the full background so you understand but keep it in everyday terms. Regards Decado
how about if i want to use a top level domain name but i dont have a vps or something, is this going to work? thanks
Top level domain is really not relevant to this discussion. Any domain at any level can be associated with any service from a dial up connection to a data center server it's just a matter of the level of effort required. Dynamic IP does increase the level of effort. I have associated top level domains with customer and friend's home dsl connection before now. If you own the domain and your registrar supports Dynamic DNS API this will work for you I feel sure. Regards Decado
